Erin Vearncombe studies religions of Mediterranean antiquity with a focus on the origins and development of the early Jesus movement. Recent research combines cultural anthropological work with scholarship on dress and the body in order to evaluate the role of clothing in the construction of Christian identity. She is also interested in the relationships among religion, text, and material culture. Her current project explores the use of sacred texts as objects, specifically the wearing of gospel texts for preventative or protective purposes.
