Nicholas Risteen is an architectural historian and theorist, researching 19th- and 20th-century architecture and urbanism in Japan. His current project focuses on post-disaster reconstruction in Japan between the Great Kantō Earthquake of 1923 and the Tokyo Olympics of 1964, exploring issues of mapping and urban planning, mass housing and new materials, and film, photography, and fiction. Other interests include aesthetics, the global exchange of ideas in architecture, and the history of design criticism in Japan.
